Star of the game
Seven years after high school and starting his fifth year at Ohio State, 25-year-old Joe Bauserman made his first start at quarterback. He was nearly flawless, hitting 12 of 16 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns (all to tight end Jake Stoneburner) and scrambling 15 yards for the first TD of the game.
Turning point
Andrew Sweat’s sweet leaping interception, courtesy of a tip from cornerback Dominic Clarke, late in the second quarter at the Akron 35-yard line. Four plays later, Bauserman hooked up with Stoneburner on a 2-yard TD pass, putting Ohio State up 21-0.
Repercussion
It was Luke Fickell’s first victory as a coach, and it was a dominating performance. Still, it came over a team that went 1-11 a year ago. Bigger challenges await, obviously, and that includes Saturday, when Mid-American Conference favorite Toledo comes to town.
